Before I immigrated to Manitoba, Canada I had never tested for Hep C in my country, should I get tested for all STBBIs including Hep C?

Testing for sexually transmitted and blood borne infections (STBBIs) is generally recommended:

  • if you are sexually active
  • if you have shared injection drug use equipment, even once
  • if you or your partner are thinking about becoming pregnant

Testing for Hep C is generally recommended:

  • if you have ever used inadequately sterilized medical, dental, surgical, tattooing or body piercing equipment
  • if you have shared injection drug use equipment, even once
  • if you have had a transfusion of unscreened blood or blood products
  • if you were born in, or immigrate from a region with high hepatitis C prevalence

Sexually transmitted and blood borne infections (STBBIs) often do not have signs or symptoms. A health care provider will be able to provide more information about testing and treatment options. Visit your doctor, Nine Circles Community Health Centre or a clinic near you to be tested. Sex Friendly Manitoba has many answers to other questions about Hep C & STBBIs.
