I had a sexual encounter without a condom last night, and I’m worried I might have been exposed to HIV. Can I still get PEP, and where should I go to get it quickly?

That’s a really important question, thank you for asking it. Yes, you may still be able to get PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis). PEP is a 28-day course of HIV medications that can lower the chance of HIV infection after a possible exposure. The timing is very important it must be started within 72 hours.

In Manitoba, here are some options:

  • Emergency departments or urgent care centres in regional hospitals can start PEP, don’t wait, even if it means going after hours.
  • Primary care providers or nurse practitioners in your community clinic may also be able to help if you can see them within 72 hours.

If you’re unsure where to go, you can also call Health Links–Info Santé (1-888-315-9257) for guidance on the closest place. Health-care providers will treat your situation as confidential. The most important step is to seek care as soon as possible. Acting quickly gives PEP the best chance to work.
