Often the germs on our skin or body are harmless but sometimes they can cause infections. Used underwear may contain traces of feces (poo) or microorganisms from genital infections / sexually transmitted infections.
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are generally acquired through sexual contact. They are largely caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites. These microorganisms are passed sexually from person to person through semen, vaginal fluid, blood or other bodily fluids.
Some STIs are more infectious than others but most would require a direct contact with a infected body fluid (semen, vaginal fluid, blood or other bodily fluids) for transmission to happen. In very rare cases and under the right conditions transmission may happen through used underwear. Here are a few infections that could transmit through used underwear:
- Pubic lice (crabs) are a parasite which is known to live without a host for about 2 days. Wearing contaminated underwear within those 2 days can be risky for transmission of crabs.
- Molluscum Contagiosum is a virus that spreads from direct person-to-person physical contact and through contaminated clothing.
While these sexually transmitted microorganisms could transmit under the right conditions, the risk is very low.
One way to prevent transmission is by washing and drying the underwear before using it.
If you think this has been a risk factor for you, the best way forward is to get tested or consult your health care provider. It is important to note that all of the above mentioned STIs are treatable and can be managed effectively.
